7 Ways to Use Leftover Sand

Sand can come in handy for many projects around the home. But after completing a landscaping project, you may have excess leftover sand. If your sand is littered with dirt and debris, you may have to dispose of it. But if it’s clean, there are many ways to put it to use.

1. Add It to a Compost Pile

Sand isn’t biodegradable, but it can still serve a purpose in a compost pile, providing elements that are helpful for plants while also adding weight to the pile. The extra weight will help compress and heat the organic materials, allowing the waste to break down faster.

2. Spread It Across Your Yard

Sprinkling small amounts of leftover sand throughout your yard is a fast and efficient way to get rid of it. You don’t have to worry about a thin layer of sand harming your grass or surrounding plants.

3. Use It to Fill Holes

Your renovation or construction project may have left holes throughout your yard, creating a hazard. Luckily, sand makes a great organic filler when used alone or combined with soil.

Most plants won’t grow in heavily sanded soil, but you can plant grass seed to make the filled area match the rest of your lawn.

4. Create Textured Paint

If your project involves painting your stairs or other areas that may be dangerous if they’re too slick, consider adding a little sand to the paint. It will lend some extra friction that will serve to prevent falls. Sand can also provide an attractive textured look for interior and exterior walls.

5. Clean Up Spills

Some spilled substances, like oil and antifreeze, are tricky to clean up. Dry sand can absorb thick liquids, making them easier to clean from hard surfaces.

6. Make a Zen Garden

Some spots on your lawn may refuse to grow anything. Use extra sand to create a zen garden to beautify unsightly barren patches. Try creating patterns around a focal point, like a water fountain or boulders.

7. Give It Away

If you have no other use for your sand, you can also simply give it away. Places like daycares and parks may appreciate having fresh, clean sand to use in gardens or play areas. Alternatively, a neighbor or family member might appreciate the donation if they’re about to start their own construction or renovation project.
