Soil vs. Sand: Which Is Better to Use for Landscaping?

Sand and soil are common materials used in a number of landscaping projects. If you’re starting a project of your own, you’ve no doubt run into the question of which to use. But what’s the difference, and when should you use one over the other?

Soil is a broad term that refers to the top layer of the earth. It’s composed of rocks, dirt, and organic material from decomposed plants and animals. Sand, on the other hand, is formed by rocks, calcium carbonate, and other materials.

Sand and soil are frequently used in landscaping projects. If you’re preparing to start a project of your own, you might ask yourself which is better for the job.

Soil vs. Sand: Which Is Better to Use for Landscaping?

Using Sand for Your Landscaping Project

Landscapers use sand for many projects in the backyard. One of the most common is in-between paving stones, also known as pavers. And in order to build a flat paver walkway, you will need level pavers. Sand has a leveling quality, preventing the pavers from moving or breaking. A level surface makes the pavers much more stable.

Another use for sand is creating a children’s play area. Sand makes a good base for underneath play equipment, and it doesn’t easily get tracked out of the play area. By using sand, you can create a soft playing surface and close it off using small pavers.

Using Soil for Your Landscaping Project

Garden soil is optimal for growing vegetables, flowers, or herbs. However, the soil used in your garden depends on the type of plants you want to grow. Another kind of soil, called black dirt, isn’t ideal for plants, but it works well to prepare your yard for sod or create walkways.

The third type of soil is called compost. This is organic material that has decomposed. Although it’s not an alternative to garden soil or black dirt, you can add it to either to improve the quality. Compost is full of nutrients that can make your soil healthier for your plants.

Sand and soil both have their benefits and can be used in different ways to create your ideal landscaping. Your choice depends on your goal because they are both valuable materials for any landscaping project.
